Kashgar Column
laminated C-prints and wood
2013

Kashgar Column is a work I made after visiting Xinjiang province in China. Because I am currently researching construction sites in China, I wanted to photograph the rather controversial Old City demolition/restoration that is currently going on. I was quite taken by some of the traditional architectural elements like the column capitals and wanted to make a piece that simultaneously reflected my wonder at the form, and complete illiteracy as regards its meaning as a cultural artifact. This capital is made of images of closed doors in the old city, symbolizing my curiosity in opposition with my necessary status as an outsider.
